The Rappahannock County School Board will hold a public comment session on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the RCHS Band Room. The purpose of the session will be to solicit comments from the public prior to development of the 2011-2012 school budget. Individuals and organizations with suggestions for the 2011-2012 school budget are encouraged to speak at the meeting. It is not necessary for speakers to request placement on the agenda for this portion of the School Board meeting. This meeting will allow the board to hear suggestions prior to development of the school budget. The budget development timeline calls for the board to hold a series of public comment sessions prior to final budget adoption at the end of March. Christmas trees are for sale at Hearthstone School, 11576 Lee Highway, Sperryville. Norway Spruce are $40 and Blue Spruce are $10 per foot. Trees are in the parking lot, self-serve, until Christmas Day. Stop by anytime during the day. Trees are donated by Moosehill Farm. All proceeds benefit Hearthstone School. Master Gardener volunteer training will be held in Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange counties starting Jan. 11 and continuing each Tuesday until mid-April from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The training will rotate between the local extension offices. The Rappahannock County Garden Club has a Nature Camp Scholarship Program for Rappahanock children. The Garden Club provides scholarships for local children to attend Nature Camp in Vesuvius, Va. The camps provide hands-on natural history and environmental education to boys and girls currently enrolled in fifth through 12th grades. The United Daughters of the Confederacy, Culpeper Chapter #73 invite Rappahannock students to submit entries for the annual essay contest. There are categories for high school, middle and elementary age students. Private and home schooled-students are encouraged to enter as well. Prizes will be awarded for each grade category. There is a $50 prize for first place, $35 for second place and $25 for third. A copy of the essay rules and checklist can be obtained through the Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School, and the Rappahannock County Public Library.
