The 7th annual “Christmas in Little Washington” festivities, sponsored by the Rappahannock Hospitality & Visitors Association (RHVA), are Sunday, Dec. 4. Events begin at 10 a.m. with artisans’ markets at the Washington Town Hall and RAAC Community Theatre featuring more than 30 local artists and crafters, along with food and wine vendors (the markets are open till 4).

This year the holiday parade along Main and Gay Streets – which starts at 1 p.m. – will feature antique cars, floats, animals and Santa Claus himself (along with Mrs. Claus this year).

Rappahannock resident Col. John Bourgeois, the former director of the United States Marine Band, will lead the parade as grand marshall. He’ll be assisted by Rappahannock’s famous “critters,” including horses, llamas and a camel, and honorary grand marshall Foxcliffe “Hickory” Wind (and her nine pups) of Flint Hill. Hickory is the female Scottish Deerhound who won “Best In Show” and became the 2011 Grand Champion of the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club of New York.

Among the parade’s classic automobiles will be a 1928 Hudson Essex, a 1931 Chrysler, and a distinctive orange General Lee Dodge Charger from “The Dukes of Hazzard.”

At 2 p.m., Stonyman Gourmet’s Town Square will host Santa Claus, who’ll have a gift for all the children who come by for a visit, and Ben “Cooter” Jones and Cooter’s Garage Band will play and sing country and Christmas favorites, while folks keep warm at the outdoor Christmas hearth.

There are a number of simultaneous and/or related events: Check out the rare Christmas stamp display, courtesy of Flint Hill postmaster Lee Morrison, from 12:30 to 7 at the Washington Baptist Church on Sunday; and Col. Bourgeois will be at R.H. Ballard’s on Main Street from 2 to 4 to sign copies of his new CD, “Tempo de Bourgeois,” sales of which will benefit the Rappahannock County High School Panther band.

And the night before, Saturday (Dec. 3), get into the holiday spirit a with a jazz guitar performance at the Theatre at 8.
