All county government offices will be closed Monday (Jan. 2) in observance of New Year’s Day and will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 3

The Rappahannock County Public Schools will reopen Monday (Jan. 2).

Union First Market Bank and BB&T will be closed Monday (Jan. 2) in observance of New Year’s.

The Rappahannock News will be closed Monday (Jan. 2). Also, holiday early deadlines for the Thursday, Jan. 5 edition are in effect: All items for publication should be submitted no later than 3 p.m. Friday (Dec. 30).

On Monday, Jan. 4, the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors will meet at 2 at the Rappahannock County courthouse on Gay Street. (No 7 p.m. meeting.) Agenda highlights include election of officers, 2011 (conducted by county administrator); Forestry Department report with Joe Rossetti; Musco lighting agreement payout; RSW regional jail update; discussion of second public comment period for board agendas; community action program (Bette Mahoney); deputy registrar of voters; budget hearing process and schedule; Social Services, Water and Sewer Authority and Library Board appointments; December building permit report; tourism report; reminder that statements of economic interest due Jan. 15.

Closed session for personnel matters (county administrator and county attorney).

On New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) services at Woodville Baptist Church (4629 Sperryville Pike) begin at 11 a.m. with special music by Light of the World Ministry. All are welcome.

On Thursday, Jan. 5, the Rappahannock County Water and Sewer Authority will meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County courthouse on Gay Street.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy Culpeper Chapter #73 invites the students of Rappahannock County to participate in its annual essay contest. Public , private and home-schooled students are encouraged to enter. Prizes, awarded in six grade categories spanning first through 12th grade, are $50 (first-place) $35 and $25. If you have an interest in history, essay rules and checklist can be found at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School and the Rappahannock County Public Library.
