Piedmont Softball Association, a girls’ fast-pitch league based in Amissville, is now accepting registrations for its 2012 spring season. All girls residing in Rappahannock and surrounding counties born in 1993-2006 (5 to 18 years old as of Jan. 1) are welcome, as are skill levels from beginner to experienced. Sign-ups are 9 to noon Saturdays, Jan. 21 and Feb. 4, at Bill Payne Auctions (10 Maddox Lane) on U.S. 211 in Amissville. The fees are $50 for girls playing 12 and under and $55 for older girls; there is a $5 per girl discount for the second and subsequent player registered from the same household. A copy of each new player’s birth certificate needs to be presented at the time of registration. Scholarships are available for any girl unable to pay the fee. The United Daughters of the Confederacy Culpeper Chapter #73 invites the students of Rappahannock County to participate in its annual essay contest. Public, private and home-schooled students are encouraged to enter. Prizes, awarded in six grade categories spanning first through 12th grade, are $50 (first-place) $35 and $25.
