At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 16), Rappahannock County Planning Commission meets at the Washington fire hall. Highlights on the agenda: Jones and Viator field party; Lloyd dog kennel; Comprehensive Plan open forum.

The Washington Town Council hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. May 14 at Town Hall. Agenda highlights include: public hearing on a special use permit application from Ray Gooch requesting the use of an accessory apartment in an existing building, public hearing on the FY 2012-2013 budget, an update on the natural habitat area, award of Town Hall painting bid, authorization of the mayor to sign a grant application to the Virginia Department of Forestry and consideration of a proposed increase in the Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority contract.

The Town Council voted April 8 to move the June council meeting date to June 18.

The Town of Washington’s May Architectural Review Board (ARB) meeting is canceled as there are no applications.

Mountain Adventure Camps featuring a wide variety of age-appropriate outdoor activities including swimming, hiking, wildlife and plant identification, games, crafts, group problem solving, survival skills, climbing wall and low ropes-course elements, backpacking and, most of all, building children’s comfort levels with the outdoors will be offered as: Day Camps (ages 4-7 June 11-15 and July 9-13; ages 8-13 June 18-22 and 25-29); Backpacking Camp (Aug. 6-10, ages 13-18) and Rock Climbing Camp (July 30-Aug. 3, ages 13-18). Belle Meade’s summer camps this year include: Day Camp (outdoor, active fun for ages 6-13, with five two-week sessions from June 11 to August 17, swimming, canoeing, hiking, archery, arts and crafts and transportation from Amissville, Rappahannock County Park, Sperryville, Culpeper, Madison) and Swim Camp (ages 4-7, three one-week sessions June 11-15, July 9-13 and July 23-27). The 4-H Culpeper-Shenandoah-Rappahannock (CSR) overnight camp has a few spots still available. The 4-H camp is June 10-14 at the 4-H Education Center in Front Royal. For $220, 9- to 12-year-old campers can spend a fun-filled week participating in workshops (swimming lessons, canoeing, high ropes, horses, outdoor cooking, makeup, and many more), daily swimming in the pool and taking part in an evening activity such as a pool party, a dance and a talent show. Every night ends under the stars at the giant campfire where campers learn many camp songs. Spots fill quickly and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
