Photos: Bridge up, but not out

VDOT contractors took out the 1929-vintage steel span out of Sperryville’s U.S. 522 bridge over the Thornton River on Tuesday as part of the bridge reconstruction project. Initially intending to cut the piece up and sell it for scrap, VDOT was detoured by Rappahannock farmer and real estate agent Alex Sharp – who, after working out a deal and hiring Vaught Trucking in Front Royal, assumed ownership of the 30-ton, 60-by-27-foot structure as soon as the cranes set it atop a waiting flatbed. It was trucked (very carefully) to the field beside Alex and Ashleigh Cannon Sharp’s Copper Fox Antiques not far away, where it will stay while Sharp figures out which of several possible uses (including as a river crossing on his Harris Hollow farm) will work best. “It’s not every day you get to have your own bridge,” Sharp said.
