Hospice of the Rapidan’s next volunteer training program starts Oct. 5 and continues, 9 to noon on Tuesdays and Fridays through Oct. 19 at 1200 Sunset Lane, Culpeper. Reminder: Rappahannock County’s Household Hazardous Waste Pick-Up Day is 8 to 3 this Saturday (Sept. 22) at CFC Farm & Home Center (the Coop), 12645 Lee Hwy., Washington.

The Northern Piedmont Community Foundation (NPCF) conducts a broad-based grant-making program which provides vital funding for all aspects of community well being. Resources are concentrated geographically to preserve and enhance the quality of life to residents of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison and Rappahannock counties. NPCF considers grant requests once per year. The deadline for requests for the next annual cycle is a 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15. Visit to download the application and guidelines.

Next Monday (Sept. 24) is the deadline to join the Blue Ridge Chorale this season. Under the direction of Carole Tomhave, rehearsals are already underway for the group’s holiday concert program, “Sing We Now of Christmas,” includes works of Marc Antoine Charpentier and Jackson Berkey and a variety of traditional carols. Chorale meets 6:30 p.m. Mondays at Open Door Baptist Church (754 Germanna Hwy., Culpeper). The Youth Chorale, for 7- to 14-year-olds and directed by Catherine ter Weele, meets 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. Mondays, also at Open Door, and also performs in the seasonal concerts. Piedmont Softball Association is accepting registrations for all area girls interested in its fast-pitch fall programs. Girls born 1992 through 2006 are welcome, as well as any skill level from beginner through very experienced. Games are played at the home field on U.S. 211 in Amissville as well as in surrounding counties.
