To coincide with the memorial service in Arizona last week for the 19 members of the “hotshot” wildfire-fighting crew who died tragically while fighting the Yarnell blaze the week before, George Swett created a memorial to his fallen comrades in front of his home near Sperryville. Swett is among the 30 members, in Rappahannock and surrounding counties, of a Virginia Department of Forestry-sponsored crew that fights wildland fires in the region. Also a member of Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad, Swett said the memorial was dedicated to the crew in Arizona, but it’s also a reminder of the friends and neighbors who work at forest firefighting jobs that put their lives at great risk.
