The Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance is accepting applications for its program to provide one-time grants for assistance with administrative fees associated with a conservation easement. Easements must be recorded in 2013. For these grants, the easement must be donated to an Accredited Land Trust, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) or a conservation-related state agency (e.g.: the Department of Forestry). Applicants must have already met the standards of the accredited land trust, VOF or state agency accepting the easement. For more information or an application, email

The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service offers a ServSafe Food Handler Class from 9 to noon Oct. 21 and Nov. 11 at the Fauquier and Culpeper County extension offices, respectively. The class ($12 per person) covers why food safety is important, personal hygiene, controlling time and temperature, preventing cross contamination and cleaning and sanitizing. There will be an organizational meeting to establish a Little League program in Rappahannock County on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at the elementary school cafeteria. The United Daughters of the Confederacy’s annual essay contest is open to all students of Rappahannock County, including home-schoolers. There are a categories for high school, middle and elementary age students, with cash prizes awarded for each.
