A male Dama gazelle, one of three born late last month at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, receives an exam from SCBI veterinarians. The rarest of all gazelles (there are fewer than 500 in the wild), the Dama are listed as critically endangered. Their population used to range widely across northern Africa, but is now limited to Chad, Mali and Niger. (And, at least for now, Front Royal.)
