The driver of this 2006 Chevy, 22-year-old Gregory Smoot of Midland, was charged with reckless driving after colliding head-on with a 2011 Toyota driven by Margaret Stewart, 53, of Dumfries, on U.S. 211 inside Shenandoah National Park. Smoot was heading west and uphill; a witness in another westbound vehicle watched Smoot’s car and another car pass him at high speed and disappear around one of the road’s notoriously dangerous curves — after which, the witness said, he came upon this accident scene. Another police investigator said Smoot’s and two other vehicles, part of an apparent group of seven, had been pulled over earlier on U.S. 211 near Washington and issued warnings for dangerous driving behavior. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and were hospitalized briefly, with non-life-threatening injuries, after Sperryville Fire, Sperryville Rescue and Washington rescue crews responded.
