Going above and beyond for Hospice support

Cindy Rickett, Edward Jones investment advisor and Hospice of the Rapidan volunteer, knows the struggles not-for-profit healthcare providers are experiencing, having served on hospice’s board of directors and most recently on the organization’s advancement committee.

All of which makes her recent acquisition of a $5,000 grant for HotR more remarkable.

Rickett learned that Pacific Life, one of the insurers she works with, had a foundation, and decided to look into it. “I’ve been actively engaged with Pacific Life for many years,” she said. “And I know the federal budget sequester and Medicare and Medicaid cutbacks have taken a toll on our non-profit healthcare providers.

“Since I’ve seen first-hand the amazing work Hospice of the Rapidan does so quietly in our community every single day, I decided to request funding for them. Pacific Life grants only 20 funding requests per year, so I didn’t hold out much hope that our little hospice here in Culpeper would be awarded a grant.  But, like I tell my clients, if you don’t make the first step, you’ll never get where you want to go!”

“When Cindy called me and asked for some information to include in a grant she was submitting, I was overjoyed to have that kind of support,” said hospice advancement director Cyndy Pierce. “Usually, grant writing is my job! When the phone call came from Pacific Life Foundation telling us we were a grant recipient for $5,000, I was stunned. I never expected it! All I could think of was that this money could pay for over a month of hospice care and pain medications for someone who couldn’t afford it!  It’s this kind of partnership that makes a huge difference for any not-for-profit organization, and we’re so very grateful for her continued service and support of our mission.”

Hospice of the Rapidan provides compassionate and dignified hospice care for terminally ill patients and their families and is the only non-profit community hospice serving Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Madison and Orange counties, providing service for 30 years.
