Letter: Think before you shoot

I am an Amissville resident of 20 years living on Hinsons Ford Road. Our family members hunt, target shoot and have always supported responsible gun ownership, use and safety. From time to time I have heard target practice and shooting near my property. However, the Sunday of Memorial weekend (May 25), I was shocked and frightened by the shooting that occurred around 6:30 in the evening and went on for 45 minutes to an hour.

I was entertaining family and friends in my backyard including a 10-year old, a 4-year old and a six-month old. This shooting was very loud, varied, often rapid and closer than I’d ever heard. Suddenly, the shots were pinging and ricocheting off trees on my property just 25 yards from where we were barbecuing and preparing to have dinner and near where I have an above ground propane tank. We all felt we were under siege and went immediately into the house for cover.

We called 911 and within 15 minutes Deputy Cody Dodson arrived, heard a series of shots, and went to investigate and report back. He was very professional and very supportive. An incident report has been lodged and will be followed up as necessary.

Meanwhile, my friends from the Haymarket area went home without staying for dinner, and our pleasant evening was ruined. I do not accept or understand why people can be so irresponsible with firearms and so oblivious to neighbors. The horrible possibility of one of us — possibly the children — being hurt angered us all. No more! Please think before you shoot!
