‘Get Your Kids Hiking!’ in Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park and the Shenandoah National Park Association host a hands-on program with Jeff Alt, author of  “Get Your Kids Hiking: How to Start Them Young and Keep it Fun,” at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14.

Alt teams up with park rangers to lead kids and accompanying adults on a short hike loaded with hands-on family hiking tips and ways to explore the outdoors. Learn how a few simple techniques and some basic equipment can turn any walk in the woods into a safe, fun-filled adventure that kids of all ages and parents will enjoy.

The free program is at Byrd Visitor Center on Skyline Drive (milepost 51) on Skyline Drive. Come prepared for a short walk. Alt, an expert hiker, member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the author of “A Walk for Sunshine,” “Four Boots One Journey” and “Get Your Kids Hiking,” will sign copies of his books following the program. (The program is repeated on July 19; Alt will also present his “A Walk for Sunshine” Appalachian Trail program at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at Big Meadows Lodge.)

Shenandoah National Park’s $15-per-car entrance fee is good for seven days. For more information visit nps.gov/shen.
