Photos: Officially open

The official grand opening of Washington’s Natural Habitat, Restoration Area and Nature Trail took place Friday afternoon (June 27) near the entrance to Leggett Lane. The ceremony — which drew a sizeable crowd of locals and featured brief talks from Mayor John Sullivan, Old Rag Master Naturalists Jack Price and Don Hearl, Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection president Rick Kohler and more — concluded with a tour of now-officially-open trail and the planting of its second American Chestnut Tree. Prior to the ribbon cutting, Carol Heiser of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries presented Sullivan with a plaque to commemorate the trail’s success (above).
