One hundred and fifty runners and walkers braved a frosty Saturday morning before Christmas to jingle their way through the town of Washington in the name of charity. The fourth annual Jingle Bell 5K Run and Walk, sponsored by 4-H and members of the former Rappahannock-Culpeper Community Club, went off without a hitch Dec. 20 to raise funds for the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office’s (RCSO’s) “Shop with a Deputy” program.
Donned with requisite jingle bells, participants took off from the former Washington School building to the sounds of “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Run Rudolph Run” and other lively holiday hits. Shelby Burnett and Josie Kritter, founding members of the club, along with their friends and families and a host of others (see the thank-you letter here), have coordinated the annual event since 2011.
As the results were being compiled, the girls doled out door prizes and Deputy Robbie Fincham, on behalf of the RCSO, addressed the crowd, thanking them for their support and noting that an additional number of families would benefit from the money raised by the race.
The first male and female runners to cross the festive finish line were both from Rappahannock. The overall male winner was Rick Myers of Woodville, with a time of 20:13.1; the overall female winner was Alex Forte of Sperryville, at 20:30.4.
