Next Tuesday (July 28), the Virginia Department of Transportation says it will close a segment of Route 601 (Nethers Road) for two days while crews restore a section of eroded riverbank on the Hughes River, which runs alongside Route 601 at the Rappahannock/Madison county line.
The road will be closed to through traffic just south of Route 707 (Sharp Rock Road) and is expected to reopen Thursday, July 30, weather permitting. Access to driveway entrances will be maintained during the closure.
A detour has been established for motorists during the closure, including those wishing to reach the Old Rag Mountain trailhead in Shenandoah National Park. Southbound motorists will be directed right onto to Route 646 (Champe Plain Road), and then left onto Route 231 (South F.T. Valley Road), which carries traffic back to Route 601. Those traveling north on Route 601 will reverse the detour.
Message boards will be placed to notify motorists of the closure.
