Letter: Close the gun law loopholes

I have many fond memories of the Smith Mountain Lake A-frame house built by my father and uncle back when the lake first opened in 1966. And I’ve had many fine meals and good times at Bridgewater Plaza — where yesterday, as I write this, two news team members were gunned down in cold blood on live TV.

The world seems to be going crazy around us, but can we all agree on this one thing: Strengthen and close loopholes of gun laws to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally disturbed, and make any mishandling of a firearm a felony in Virginia — not a misdemeanor, as the law currently stands today. This would disallow the felon to own any future firearms.

It would be a safe starting point for all.
