Free Rug Hooking Workshop at River District Arts is this Saturday (Sept. 26) from 1 to 4 p.m. at RDA’s Studio 9, 3 River Lane, Sperryville. Sally Mello of Oak Shade Farm conducts a rug-hooking workshop where you can learn the ease of making a family heirloom of your own design. Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church (3948 Sperryville Pike, Sperryville) is holding “Love and Respect” marriage classes Friday evenings through Oct. 23. Classes start with dinner at 5:30 and are open to the community. Let the church know if you plan to attend by calling 540-987-9101.

Rappahannock County students are invited to take part in the annual essay contest held by the Culpeper Chapter #73 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Categories for high school, middle and elementary students; private and home-schooled students also encouraged to enter. Prizes for each grade category include a $50 first prize. If you have an interest in history, pick up a copy of the essay topics and rules at Rappahannock County Public Schools, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School or the Rappahannock County Public Library. Descendants of the Bolen family and friends gather at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the parking area at the end of Keyser Run Road (Route 614) in Gid Brown Hollow for a picnic/clean up day. All interested are requested to be prompt, pass the word along and bring a dish or drink to share at the picnic. The Blue Ridge Singers welcome adventurous singers 16 and older. The group’s repertoire spans contemporary composers (e.g., Lauridsen, Gjeilo, Runestad), the Renaissance, the 17th through 20th centuries and Broadway musicals. The ability to read music is a plus; a fast ear works, too. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in Stephens City; concerts are presented in December and April in Frederick, Warren and Prince William counties. Culpeper NAACP hosts a bus ride to the Million Man March 20th Anniversary to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 10 (refreshments will be served). Tickets are $35; deadline to sign up is Sept. 17. Bus leaves Culpeper Library at 6:30 a.m. and departs D.C. at 5 p.m., with a stop to eat on the way home; it arrives in Culpeper at about 9:30 p.m. For more, visit

Piedmont Softball Association is now accepting registrations for all area girls (born 1996-2009) at all skill levels interested in its fast-pitch programs this fall. Blue Ridge Singers seek vocalists interested in performing fun and challenging repertoire. Based in Front Royal, the BRS rehearses Tuesday evenings and presents in three counties.
