Another Lions Club ChiliFest is behind us. As usual, we had a super time and were only disappointed when the music, visiting and eating had to end for the drawdown.
Participants had a dozen chili concoctions to choose from, served up by volunteer members of the Rappahannock County High School Leo Club. By popular vote, Griffin Tavern became a four-time winner among local restaurants and inns, and DeEtte Axelson returned atop the home chef category.
Ticketholder Travis Williams snagged the $5,000 prize in the drawdown, with longtime Lion and former county supervisor Bob Anderson sitting in for him. Charles Whorton won the drawing for dinner for two at The Inn at Little Washington.
This event could never happen without the hard work of Jim Blubaugh, Larry Grove, Frank Raiter, Rick and Kaye Kohler, Brian Taylor, Bill Pragluski and the rest of the club. We also want to thank Carolyn Manwaring and her crew — DeEtte Axelson, Anne Robertson, Merle Daczewitz and Lisa Manwaring — for helping in the setup and decorating the Sperryville fire hall.
We thank our sponsors: T.G. Taylor & Son Construction, Better Homes & Garden Real Estate III (Kaye and Rick Kohler), Greve Foundation (John Kiser), Inn at Little Washington, Rappahannock Hunt, Rappahannock News, Thornton Hill Fort Valley Hounds, Union First Market Bank (Mike Leake), Cheri Woodard Realty, 84 Lumber, CFC Farm & Home Center and Farm Credit of the Virginias.
We thank our local restaurants for their contributions: The Flint Hill Public House, The Country Cafe, Griffin Tavern and Thornton River Catering. Thanks, too, to musicians Brian and Alex Taylor and Bright Path Bluegrass.
But the long-term beneficiaries of the annual event are the citizens of Rappahannock County. The fundraiser helps cover the Lions Club’s commitment to scholarships, service projects and nonprofit needs throughout the year. Always a fun event, the ChiliFest and Drawdown is a great way for prospective club members to get to know the Lions community, their spouses and families, and find out more about our service activities year-round.
