Letter: Credit card fees: the tax on tax bills?

The Rappahannock County Treasurer’s Office has arranged to permit us to pay our real estate and personal property tax bills with a credit card, either online at their website or by a telephone call to their office. However, significant fees are involved with this method of payment.

For a tax bill of $40 or less, the fee is $1 (4 percent of $40). For tax bills greater than $40, the fee is 2.5 percent. Thus, if you have a tax bill of about $4,000 (as I do), you would have to pay a fee of $100 to use a credit card to pay your bill! I am certainly not willing to do this, so I will mail a check for my payment to the treasurer’s office as I have done every year in the past.
