“John Marshall Dodson was born and raised on a farm on Oventop Mountain in Sperryville and enlisted in the Air Force upon graduation from high school. During his military career, his work on the experimental phases of Gemini and Apollo spacecraft earned him commendations from NASA. His six children all live in Texas and continue Marshall’s career excellence doing work ranging from nuclear engineering, certified public accounting and supplying equipment to oil refineries. Marshall is known for his mischievous sense of humor and tells the story of Aunt Cora Majors, who lived high on a hill in the hollow. When she came to visit Marshall’s mother, Pearl Dodson, Marshall would hide her cane — so she would have to stay longer.

“About 75 family members, friends and neighbors gathered at the Sperryville fire hall to celebrate Marshall’s 80th birthday on Dec. 5. His son Mitchell had smoked brisket in Texas, froze it and fed the entire crowd some of the tastiest, most tender dinner ever. We wish Marshall a very happy birthday!”
