Rappahannock County Public Schools will be on winter break Dec. 21  through Jan. 5 (staff return Jan. 4). The next regularly scheduled school board meeting is 6 p.m. Jan. 12 in the high school band room.

The Washington Town Council meets 7 p.m. Monday (Dec. 14) at the town hall. Agenda includes: the appointment of an ARB member; consideration of a water tap application from Charles Akre, owner of Mt. Prospect; continued discussion of marketing and sale of Avon Hall property and possible adoption of related resolutions; review and possible approval of revised contract with ESS.

Rappahannock County High School’s fundraiser fruit will be available for pickup 3:30 to 5 p.m. today and tomorrow (Dec. 10-11) and 8:30 to noon Saturday (Dec. 12) at CFC Farm and Home on U.S. 211 (at the large loading dock on the far right of the co-op building). The NAACP Culpeper Branch meets 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Culpeper County Library, 271 Southgate Shopping Center. Meetings are every third Thursday of the month.  All are welcome to attend for a brief business meeting and a time of fellowship and refreshments. For more information, call 540-727-1305.

The Julia E. Boddie Scholarship Committee invites community nominations for the 2016 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dream Keeper” awards, to be presented Jan. 17 during the 25th annual MLK Celebration in Rappahannock County at The Theatre, Gay Street, Washington. Nominees must be residents or relatives of residents of Rappahannock County. Awardees will be selected in three categories: individuals/adult, individuals/student and group, business or organization. Kids Bible Club (for first- through fourth-graders) of Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church meets after school, 3:30 to 5, every Wednesday. Healthy snacks, music and song, Bible lessons, crafts and monitored outdoor activities and games. The Blue Ridge Singers welcome adventurous singers 16 and older. The group’s repertoire spans contemporary composers (e.g., Lauridsen, Gjeilo, Runestad), the Renaissance, the 17th through 20th centuries and Broadway musicals. The ability to read music is a plus; a fast ear works, too. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights in Stephens City; concerts are presented in December and April in Frederick, Warren and Prince William counties. Sit-n-Knit at the Knit Wit Yarn Shop, 45 Main Street, Sperryville (next to the post office) is every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. (until 8ish).
