Presidents’ Day closings on Monday, Feb. 15, and reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 16:  All Rappahannock County government offices; Rappahannock County Public Schools; Union Market and Trust and BB&T and the Rappahannock News is closed on Monday,  (Feb. 15) and reopen Tuesday, (Feb. 16).The Rappahannock News also has early deadlines for the Thursday, Feb. 18 edition. All items for publication should be submitted no later than 5  p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 12).

Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services transportation will not operate on Monday, Feb. 15, in observance of President’s’ Day.

The Rappahannock County School Board will hold a public hearing on the budget at the Feb. 18 meeting, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The Rappahannock County Republican Committee holds a mass meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, at the county courthouse. Thrift Shop, 10 Firehouse Lane, Washington, will hold a $10 Bag Sale for the entire month of February. They are packed with premium clothing for men, women and children. The sale includes clothing, shoes and boots and accessories. Individually priced items are not included.  We will be restocking the racks as the sale progresses. And, to add to the excitement, we are continuing the daily drawing for a chance to get your first bag at $5. During this sale, for the entire month of February, we will NOT be accepting donations. Thrift Shop is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Piedmont Softball Association in Amissville is registering players now. Girls from Rappahannock and surrounding counties born anytime from 1997 through 2010 are welcome to join us. PSA offers every opportunity to develop all fastpitch softball skills – beginner through advanced – while having fun: local-league through tournament play; weekly dedicated pitching/catching practices; and individual attention for every player. Teams will be available in all age groups for which there is enough interest. Registration fee is $55 or less, and covers the entire year (spring, fall). Player and equipment scholarships are always available.Girls may register in person Sunday, Feb. 14, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the ballfield (inside) at 10 Maddox Lane, Amissville. Rappahannock County 4-H is accepting summer program registrations at the Extension office. These programs are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, call 540-675-3619.

All novels, hardback and soft cover, big and small, will be on sale at half price for the next six weeks.  Also on sale half price are all travel and science books. Certain higher priced interesting books are also on sale. Remember that all the profits from the Book Barn go to the Rappahannock County Library, all work is done by volunteers, and all books are donated. The Book Barn is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located next to the library on Library Road.

Free VITA income tax preparation is available on Saturdays, through April 9, at St. James Episcopal Church in Warrenton, throughout the tax season with IRS trained volunteers.
