Local Golden-Rule enforcement

I wanted to share with you what happened to us when we drove through your home county of Rappahannock recently. A friend of mine and I were on our way to spend a long weekend at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone campground in Luray with my two youngest grandchildren. Apparently we did not realize that we had exceeded the speed limit until we saw the flashing lights of Deputy [Shawn] Walters’ cruiser in our mirror.

While we do not have a lot of experience with law officers, I have always found them to be professional and polite. However, Deputy Walters far exceeded this. He was friendly, outgoing and spoke kindly to the children. He explained the ticket to us very thoroughly — and, in the end, presented my grandson and granddaughter with homemade gifts that his mom makes for him to keep in his cruiser.

The kids were really surprised and could not wait to tell their dad about the experience. My grandson said he was going to tell everyone they should get their speeding tickets in Rappahannock County. What a great way for today’s children to see that police are people, too. What a wonderful place it must be to live in.

Thank you for letting me share this with you,

Brenda Braden
