“The photograph is more exciting than the story,” says Trinity Episcopal Church of Washington parishioner Ruthie Windsor-Mann. “The cross is crooked and the only way to assess why was to find something that would reach that high. The first attempt was thwarted when the extension [ladder] wouldn’t reach that far.
The Sperryville Fire Department’s truck was turned around and two guys were able to reach the cross. The determination was that the cross was old and deteriorated and will need to be replaced. Sperryville Fire is the only fire department in the county that has a [tower ladder] truck like that.”
