Unlike several other local events, the premier of this year’s “Second Friday” talks is going on as scheduled Friday.

The new season of Second Friday RAAC Talks will start with a rush on Sept. 14 (8 p.m., at the library). Jack Ford, a CBS and PBS news veteran, will talk about a new novel set in Rappahannock. Chariot on the Mountain is based on a true courtroom case from the 1840s, about a young slave named Kitty who won her freedom fourteen years before the Civil War. Ford is an award-winning journalist and a former trial attorney with a particular interest in court cases where slaves argued that they had a legal right to freedom.
