Last Saturday evening, a group of caring Rappahannock citizens attended a broad-ranging discussion of Dr. Joanna Breyer’s path-breaking new book: “When Your Child Is Sick — a Guide to Navigating the Practical and Emotional Challenges of Caring for a Child who is Very Ill.” Breyer is a PhD in psychology who spent nearly 30 years as a pediatric psychologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.

She wrote this book to help parents and grandparents work through the harsh reality of a severely sick or terminally ill child. The book offers expert advice on hospital admissions, home care, and long term realities. David G. Nathan, president emeritus of Dana-Farber, remarked, this book is “a treasure trove of advice for those facing the greatest fear parents have — that of losing a child.” Breyer has generously donated copies of her book to the Rappahannock Public Library and to the library at Rappahannock County High School.
