Over the last 35 years, Rappahannock residents have had a chance to hear Paul Reisler’s music with Trapezoid, Kid Pan Alley, Ki Theatre, and A Thousand Questions.
Tomorrow (Friday) Sept. 28, you’ll get to hear his newest incarnation, Paul Reisler & Three Good Reasons in concert at the Castleton Theatre House. They’ll be joined by special guests Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell and Heather Mae.
The evening opens at 6:30 with a community sing led by the astounding Ysaye Barnwell, formerly of Sweet Honey in the Rock.
“There is an awesome power in the human voice and when uncommon voices are blended for the common good, they become a ‘vocal community’ at its best,” says Barnwell. Singers and non-singers alike will share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing a variety of songs from African American culture.
The concert begins at 8 with Paul Reisler & Three Good Reasons featuring sax virtuoso Marshall Keys and vocalist Lea Morris.
“This will be one of the most special concerts I’ve ever done in my 45-year career because we’ll be joined in harmony by two of my favorite singers of all time — Ysaye Barnwell and Heather Mae,” says Reisler. “I just realized and it’s been about four years since I’ve done a concert of my music around here.”
They’ll also premiere the brand new choral arrangement of Kid Pan Alley’s “I Do Love Virginia” with baritone soloist Stan Engebretson, Director of Choral Music at George Mason University.
The evening is the opening event for a weekend of songwriting, singing, and performance workshops with Reisler, Barnwell and actress/director Dietlinde Maazel. Tickets for the concert and sing are $30 in advance and $40 at the door if any are left by show time at www.bit.ly/sc-concert.
There is still space available for the entire weekend of concerts and workshops at www.bit.ly/songwriting18. Thanks to a grant from RAAC’s Claudia Mitchell Fund, Rappahannock residents get a heavily discounted rate of $150 for the entire weekend.
